We’ve combined the classical beauty and tradition found in the handcrafted Bogolan cloths of the Malian people with natural vegetable tanned leather to create unique drum/bucket bags we’ve named Kedi.
One of the best known traditional African cloths, Bògòlanfini (bogolan), or “mud cloth", is a handmade Malian cotton fabric dyed using a process of fermented mud that dates back to the 12th century. It has an important place in traditional Malian culture and has, more recently, become a symbol of Malian cultural identity.
Although made and used by many Malian ethnic groups, the designs made by the Bambana people are the ones which have the most international recognition.

Taking its creative inspiration from the lifestyle of the Afar people, the WAWI 2021 bag collection was developed in collaboration with two artists; Micheal Tsegaye and Isabel Tesfazghi. The Afar society represents a vivid example of the many African cultures passing through the turbulence of globalization while resiliently struggling to maintain their indigenous identities. Photographed by Micheal Tsegaye in 2019, the Afar man and women featured on the bags manifest originality and boldness embedded within the social fabric of the Afar society. Designed by Isabel Tesfazghi, the patterns accompanying the photograph stand for dynamic movements and spiritual connectivity.
